National Climate & Environment Coordinator – UNICEF Lao PDR

About the role

The National Climate and Environment Coordinator will lead the implementation of UNICEF Lao PDR’s DDR Climate Strategy and the Safe and Clean Environment outcome of the 2027‑2031 Country Programme. Based in the UNICEF Country Office, the role involves extensive coordination with government ministries, development partners and field missions across the country.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate implementation of climate‑resilient social services, children climate vulnerability assessments and disaster risk reduction activities.
• Facilitate efficient liaison among the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, National Designated Authority and line ministries for health and education.
• Oversee air‑pollution monitoring, early warning systems and related environmental health initiatives.
• Ensure programme objectives are met within stipulated timeframes and report progress to UNICEF headquarters.
• Provide technical guidance on climate financing and cross‑border Mekong regional collaboration.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (MSc) in Environmental Management, Environmental Health, Planning or Civil Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of professional experience coordinating climate and environmental projects in Lao PDR.
• Excellent oral and written proficiency in Lao and English.
• Proven experience liaising with national and local government and development partners.
• Strong knowledge of project management tools and methodologies.
