Junior Aquatic Ecology Specialist

About the role

Join AFRY’s HydroPower Sustainability team to conduct environmental impact assessments for hydropower and other renewable energy projects, focusing on aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem protection.

Key responsibilities

• Perform environmental impact assessments for hydropower facilities in line with International Lenders’ standards.
• Support aquatic biodiversity field surveys (fish, macroinvertebrates, water quality) in rivers and reservoirs.
• Assist with species identification, taxonomic verification, and specimen management.
• Contribute to literature reviews, habitat assessments and species status evaluations.
• Draft technical sections of ESIA reports and biodiversity management plans.
• Enter, quality‑control and analyse ecological datasets.
• Liaise with local authorities, counterparts and field teams.
• Support the design of fish migration facilities and prepare technical reports and presentations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, limnology or related field (required); Master’s/PhD preferred.
• Experience in aquatic ecology assessments and knowledge of relevant methodologies.
• Understanding of aquatic life cycles, habitats and Mekong ichthyofauna.
• Fluent Lao and working proficiency in English for report writing and coordination.
• Willingness to travel, work in remote field conditions and collaborate in an interdisciplinary, international team.
