Junior Aquatic Ecology Specialist

About the role

AFRY is looking for a Junior Aquatic Ecology Specialist to join its HydroPower Sustainability team. You will support environmental impact assessments for hydropower and other renewable energy projects across Southeast Asia, focusing on aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct field surveys of fish, macroinvertebrates, and water quality in rivers and reservoirs.
• Assist with species identification, taxonomic verification, and specimen management.
• Contribute to literature reviews, habitat assessments, and species status evaluations.
• Draft technical sections of ESIA reports and biodiversity management plans.
• Enter, quality‑check, and analyse ecological datasets.
• Liaise with local authorities, partners, and field teams while following HSE protocols.
• Support the design of fish migration facilities and prepare technical reports and presentations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, limnology or a related field (required).
• Experience in aquatic ecology assessments and familiarity with regional ichthyofauna.
• Fluency in Lao and working proficiency in English; additional regional languages are a plus.
• Willingness to travel frequently and work in remote, challenging field conditions.
